One of Waterloo’s most iconic sights.
The monument marks where the Dutch Prince of Orange was wounded.
Constructed starting in 1823, completed over three years, the mound is 40.5 metres high and has a circumference of 520 metres. Its construction involved moving 300,000 square metres of earth from the battlefield. The cast iron lion by Van Geel, cast in Cockerill’s foundries, is 4.45 metres tall, weighs 28 tons, and places a paw on a globe: symbolizing peace achieved after years of conflict.
